This class has only further solidified my confidence that choosing enviro. science as a degree was one of the best decisions I have made. It has surrounded me with great people and has made me more passionate about solving our planet's problems

Encouraging us to talk about our ideas and takes online was very helpful as someone who doesn't usually speak up during class.

In a field that seems to be riddled with apathy and dread for the future this course provided a needed escape from the "all hope is lost" mind set.

While I didn't have time to watch every video/movie for that week, it was a refreshing approach to homework and the discussions definitely made the course more interactive.

True, this is one of the most memorable courses I have taken at UBC

I think it is inevitable that plastic alternatives will replace single-use plastics, there is too much demand for it and we have the technology and science to develop them, the only problem really is funding and scaling. Either big companies have to realize the market potential and fund these projects or be forced to by governments.

I dont think we need to ban the transportation of waste altogether. Hypothetically if a country becomes a world leader in recycling, perhaps other countries can sell what they cant recycle to them.

Interesting idea! Limiting the number of approved projects could force the government to look to long-term benefits and be more careful of what gets approved. Although, in a world where governments have an abundance of progressive projects, a cap may limit progress and delay or stifle some projects.

Very interesting idea! I see this as a preliminary step towards a largely plastic-free society that would educate people on why certain materials like plastic are harming the environment and us.

I think we can go even further with this and make waste-free stores the norm, especially since i think theres a decent amount of demand in Van

Universal adoption of USB C would be a fantastic move! As Apple is headquartered in the US though it is quite unlikely as they probably have lobbyists.

Thankfully people are growing tired of greenwashing and are quick to point it out and shame corporations. I believe we are slowly climbing towards a future that minimizes resource extraction in the tech industry, there is a company called Framework that builds completely repairable laptops that almost anyone can do and HP recently released a laptop made from recycled aluminum and is also very repairable. Pretty much anyone into tech praises this so other large companies may have to keep up with these advancements.

Yes! There must be more social safety nets for those that find themselves unable to fully support themselves. Just because someone is low-income shouldn't mean they have to give up fundamental needs and services.

I totally agree that full transparency must be implemented to counteract illegal working conditions and environmental harm. The past year has been filled with protests and attempts at unionization, most notably in the US to reveal what goes on behind the closed doors of these greedy corporations.

I agree, we must hold businesses that thrive off of the explotation of natural resources accountable for their actions in a meaningful way. Even if corportations are discovered to violate enviornmental laws and such, the fines they recieve are minimal and hardly do anything.

Hopefully our generation and those younger will incorporate more indigenous knowledge into environmental research and regard their information more as science than fiction.

I can't help but wonder if people growing up in areas with yearly wildfires and smoke events will have an increased chance of certain health conditions in the future, like people growing up with leaded gas and paint.

This fall has been especially weird with the drought we had until like a couple days ago, the only thing that felt like fall was the colourful leaves. In an ecosystem that is heavily reliant on our rain, this year has been very worrying.

I can't even stand the smell of smoke from forest fires and that alone is enough for me to wear a mask designed for pollution. I'm also surprised more people dont care enough to wear a mask when the air quality advisory gets to dangerous levels.

Only recently have we had multiple periods where air quality is amongst the worst in the world, I don't understand why we aren't hearing more about this from politicians. This shouldn't be something that is talked about as a reaction, but as something that is talked about more proactively.
