Today’s class fascinates me as we talk about some topics that were never discussed in other Environmental science classes I’ve taken. I just realized that besides climate change there are more things we could do to mitigate environmental problems. I believe that we are living in an era of consumerism, and it is important for us as students interested in environmental problems to first realize the importance of achieving non-materialistic lifestyle. I envision that as more people recognize the importance of reducing excessive consumption and returning to non-materialistic lifestyle, the marketing strategy of large companies will also be changed. However, companies will always aim for maximizing their own profits, so a lot of efforts need to be put in for their transformation.

Im glad that this class has allowed you to learn that there is more things that can be done to mitigate damage to the earth. Climate change is definitely a large aspect and I also agree that we need to transition out of consumerism and focus more on supporting sustainable businesses. Very well said.
I think you bring up a great point about the attitude shift towards a non-materialistic lifestyle. When us as individuals start to think this way, this way of thinking will begin to reflect in our actions, as we may look to buy more sustainable products rather than the most "in fashion" products. By advocating for a non-materialistic lifestyle, we can encourage others to practice the same way of life.
Hi Shirley, I also think that the business aspect is often time the cause behind a lot of environmental problems and spreading awareness is the key leverage point.
Climate change is such a huge issue that requires so many interconnected parts inorder to mitigate the effects! Its one of the reasons that got me into my degree!
I agree with you. Also, what do you think about the companies that advertise or promote corporate sustainability? I was buying a skateboard online recently and noticed that several skateboard companies claim that they would plant a tree for every skateboard bought. I think it's pretty cool but skeptical about corporate promises and claims.
Hello, i totally agree with you. A non materialistic lifestyle is quintessential for combatting the negatives of consumerism
Hi! I totally agree with you! I've also been learning more and thinking more about consumerism and the steps that I can take in my own life to cut down and stick to the things I really need instead of over purchasing and causing a burden on the earth.
Sure! I also hope that more green companies or non profit companies engage in marketing strategies that would have an emphasis on externalities. On the other hand, the customers are king, so we could change our purchasing behavior to force the change of big companies.
Hey! Totally agree with you. How do you think we can curb materialism and encourage a culture of thoughtful consumption? Do you think it starts with the youth, or should we target everyone in society regardless of age and social status?
I agree that consumerism is very eye-opening and that is why it is important to spread the word!
Hi, I agree with your post! I also think that a bottom up approach, spreading awareness to reduce consumerism etc. will be very useful towards changing industry decisions. I would add that people putting pressure on the government would also be a viable strategy to legislate / limit the actions of these large corporations, so it is important to raise more awareness within the society.
I totally agree with your point, as the concept of carbon neutral lifestyle is introduced into the market, do you think this will become a way/a title of profitability for companies in the future?
