As said in today's class, I agree that "most agriculture is inherently unsustainable." Agriculture requires the use of animals and food is as everyone knows immensely important to for our survival.
I envision a world where this is sustainable farming and farmers take more ecological friendly approach when it comes to farming and the animals. For intervention, I would say that exploring new and innovative farming techniques could be pursued to progress towards more sustainable agricultural practices. This can be done through new educational programs across the world to spread awareness. Humans need to work together to find amore suitable and sustainable method for agriculture. But this would be costly because of all the expenses and could take a toll on the farmers views/perspectives. Money is the significant limiting factor and we would need extra money to go against the farming subsidiaries to counteract the negative effects.
While it may be costly, I think education would help with saving money in the long-term. If farmers are educated and encouraged to change their practices to be more sustainable, the health of the soil will be improved which will ensure the productivity of that land farther into the future. Unfortunately, many people in positions of power do not practice this long-term thinking enough as they are primarily concerned with getting re-elected.
Hi Ravinder Dhaliwal, I agree! Perhaps by removing subsidies this money could be allocated towards helping farmers transition towards more sustainable agriculture like the abandonment of tilling and programs that educate them on ecosystems and how to reduce pesticide use? Can you think of any more specific interventions?
Hi Ravinder! I also agree that money/funding plays a large part in leading farms to move towards a more sustainable way of agriculture.
