Overconsumption is a huge problem leading to the environmental crisis. And many people are not aware of the negative effect of their choices. The truth is that although it difficult, we get to choose our values.
My vision for a better future is for our generation to become more thoughtful of controlable consumption. My plan is to lessen my contribution to fast fashion by holding on to good quality cloths for longer than hopping on to every trend.
I think a huge part of this is intentionality! Regardless of if you want to partake in this season's trends (within fashion, technology, etc), how you plan on reusing your items should be a large part in your decision before purchasing. Things only have the lifespan we give them! Plus we can repurpose old clothes into new ones with upcycling as well as turning them into collage blankets, rags and towels, etc.
However, not everyone can realize this questioin. People may feel that last year's clothes are out of fashion, so they buy new clothes that cater to the trend every year. In this way, When the closet doesn't fit, people will throw away or donate the clothes they don't wear so they can buy more clothes to fill their closet, rather than thinking about abnegating shopping.
I completely agree! Marketing is a huge reason for the overconsumption we see today, all we need to see is something on sale, the power that 10% off has is unmatched. Not so much in Canada, but in the United States, people go crazy on Black Fridays, lining up at dawn in front of stores with mediocre deals to buy unnecessary items. As we talked about in class, a majority of people think that climate change is the only things causing environmental crisis.
Overconsumption is definitely a huge problem our society faces. I am reminded every time I try to find something in our basement...it's crazy how stuff accumulates over the years. But becoming aware of the problem is the first step to creating more sustainable purchasing habits moving forward!
I like that plan! it’s much better to hold on to good pieces of clothing for years, rather than being swayed by trends and cheap fast fashion prices.
I agree with a lot of the points made in your post! Following trends is a choice we all make and can be prevented.
