I value a world where families and individuals have the right to choose how their body is processed before they die. I understand that some methods prohibit ones body from breaking down and returning to the earth, but who are we to decide this for others we do not even know. Unfortunately, this year has been a year of many deaths, both in my family and with family friends. It has made me realize how difficult it can be to decide how one is burried/cremated etc.
I envision a world where there are options beyond the normal procedures, that are ecofriendly towards the environment. However, if it was me facing death, would I really want me family to just lay me in the ground to be fed on by decomposing organisms or rather breakdown in a vat of hot water that turns me to powder? I guess I really do not know the answer right now, but to think of my flesh being fed on even after im gone just doesnt really appeal to me.
My intervention is simple, there should not be any regulations regarding how ones body is processed after death, the only decision that matters in that case is the families. Promoting a more ecofriendly burial is one thing, but we cannot simply change the beliefs of families to forge this new ideal. It is a decision that one must come to on their own.
