Advertising essentially involves the creation of wants, and modern advertising does this really effectively by preying on peoples’ insecurities. I envision more tight-knit and supportive communities which could keep people from being so readily swayed by consumerist messaging. These could form from gatherings of like-minded people, who are willing to share their values and beliefs, even in the face of potential ridicule from their immediate social circles. Eventually, this messaging could embolden others whose consumption is currently driven only by societal pressure. I'm committing to sharing my stances on rampant consumption, even amongst groups that might be less receptive to such ideas.

Hi Sumat, great idea on gathering of those who are willing to share their values and beliefs regardings issues of the climate crisis. I think peer or societial pressure can be intimidating and creating spaces for these conversations could be integral.
Thank you for sharing your perspective - sharing is a gift of one's mind and heart!
I have sought solutions to my university student time and financial management problems, only to have the technology "manage" me!!! Ack! Help!
I began to see through advertising as a money grab designed to play upon either our aesthetic ideals, or our insecurities and vulnerabilities - especially on YouTube and other places that ask you to subscribe to avoid those "annoying ads".
I simply rid my household of tv and fashion magazines since my late dad passed away in 2007 - he used to love to watch the news, professional sports, science and history documentaries. I don't miss flipping through channels on the remote, nor do I miss watching the news in general. I prefer instead to search for my own topics and interests on the internet. I have saved myself hours and hours of needless worry and angst about what terrible things we watch on the news.. So I'd like to ask, "Is there any good news on the news lately?"
It's better to own a few fine pieces of art, (and by art, I mean that which truly pleases and that one truly enjoys) rather than a clutter of piecemeal "bargains bought because it was so cheap..." that don't actually live up to one's own aesthetic ideals. The reality for many of us, though, is that limited finances can sometimes help us live more frugally and have less negative impact on the environment. I am a living witness of this phenomenon!
As for time well-spent, I implore the younger generation to spend quality time getting to know our Elders and Seniors! IF there is one thing I regret, it is that I wasn't more inquisitive about my late parents' views and lives and histories, and advice, etc.
Great point about how advertising targets our insecurities! Hopefully, the community here will allow us to be more vulnerable and feel more secure.
Great post!
I love your perspective on community! This is one of the gaps CoSphere is trying to fill—facilitating that supportive community in the face of societal pressure for consumerism etc.
I completely agree about your stances on advertising. And thank you for being brave enough to share your ideas with non receptive people as well. We can only get better as a community if we’re open to having conversations with everyone, especially those who disagree with us.
