When we think of death, we often think of traditional, anti-ecological methods, such as corpse burial or cremation. I envision a world in which these methods are advised against, while more ecologically friendly alternatives such as corpse decomposition in the soil are promoted. In accomplishing this vision, I value creativity and ingenuity. An organization that embodies these values is the death care corporation Recompose, which uses a method called “natural organic reduction” that uses microbes to convert a corpse into soil that can be used to promote new ecosystems (this process is shown in the image below). Therefore, an intervention that we can all do is promoting organizations like Recompose, both to our loved ones and on social media to connect to a wider audience. Another intervention would be to advocate for governments to support organizations like Recompose and to enforce laws that ban corpse burial and cremation.
